Sometimes one layer of self tan just isn’t enough, especially if you’re chasing extra depth for a night out, a holiday, or simply because you love a bold bronze. With the right technique, you can layer self tan on top of self tan for a richer, more even glow.
Layering isn’t about piling on product. It’s about building colour in thin, even coats so your tan develops naturally and avoids streaking or patchiness. Think of it like makeup: the best results come from gradual layers, not one heavy application.
Here’s your easy 5-step guide.
1. Exfoliate for a Fresh Canvas
Every flawless tan begins with smooth skin. Before applying your first layer, exfoliate using our Pink Exfoliating Mitt or Express Tan Remover scrub to buff away old tan and dry patches. Focus on knees, elbows, ankles, and wrists - areas where self tan can cling and appear darker.
Exfoliating doesn’t just create an even finish, it also helps your tan last longer since DHA develops best on fresh skin cells. After exfoliating, lightly moisturise dry spots to keep colour balanced.
2. Apply Your First Layer Evenly
This is your base, the foundation of your glow. Use our Luxe Tanning Mitt to apply self tanner in long, sweeping motions, blending around tricky areas like hands and feet. The aim isn’t maximum depth straight away but an even, golden start.
Our Self Tanning Mousse in Dark, Ultra Dark, or Deep Violet is perfect for layering - lightweight, fast-absorbing, and easy to blend.
3. Let It Develop Fully
Patience pays off. DHA, the active tanning ingredient, needs time to work before you add another coat. Allow your first layer to develop for 4-8 hours (overnight is ideal).
If your product has a colour guide, you can rinse it off with a quick lukewarm shower before applying the next layer. This isn’t essential but can refresh your skin and prevent build-up.
4. Add a Second Layer for Depth
Now it’s time to build. Apply a thin second coat to deepen your glow. This step takes your tan from subtle to statement, leaving you with a bronzed, fresh-from-holiday look.
5. Lock It In With Moisture
Once your tan has developed, daily hydration is key. Moisturising with our Hydrating Body Serum keeps skin supple, slows exfoliation, and helps your layered tan fade evenly.
For extra staying power, try our Gradual Tanning Butter or Self Tan Body Milk. They keep skin soft while adding a subtle DHA boost to maintain your glow between applications.
Why Layering Works
Layering lets you customise your colour without overloading skin in one go. Instead of risking streaks or an unnatural finish, you build depth gradually for a smoother, more natural look. Since Bali Body uses 100% natural DHA, layering is effective, gentle, and delivers a radiant glow you can feel good about.
